I used, in part, the summary comparison of the two on the Asskicking which describes how the two differ. Special attention to the bolded part that statement was added (unilaterally, as far as I can tell) in 2018, and isn't corroborated by anything on the actual page for Authority Equals Asskicking.Įdited by Anarchist2 on Sep 26th 2022 at 10:39:23 PM To me, the italicised part conforms to the idea that leaders are physically stronger because of narrative reasons, not for in-universe reasons. Note that a leader who simply happens to be strong is neither trope. In other words, if you're The Leader because you're the toughest, then that is this trope if you're the toughest because you're The Leader then that is the other trope. A story about a hero confronting a villainous organisation whose members became ever tougher as he closes in on the leader counts as Authority Equals Asskicking. A story about a contender rising through the hierarchy by kicking the asses of his rivals counts as Asskicking Equals Authority. The distinction depends on what type of story you're telling. Not to be confused with Authority Equals Asskicking, which often overlaps with this trope. If we don't merge into Asskicking Equals Authority (because it's getting merged into Challenging the Chief or something), then I'd suggest a disambigĮdited by amathieu13 on Sep 25th 2022 at 12:51:13 PM If not, then we can consider merging Asskicking Equals Authority into Challenging the Chief.Īs for Authority Equals Asskicking, the amount of misuse to me shows that it's not really workable as defined. If we think that's enough to keep them distinct, then merging Authority Equals Asskicking into Asskicking Equals Authority and/or rewriting into a "combat ability grants authority" should still be ok. note copied exactly from the pageĬhallenging the Chief and Asskicking Equals Authority are the most similar with the only difference seeming to be the former is when there's an actual ritual or formal system implemented, whereas the latter can happen without that.
